Shake Shack (Marin, Palo Alto, and S.F. Coming Soon)

Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite the success, with Shack fans lined up daily for three summers.

In 2004, a permanent kiosk opened in the park: Shake Shack was born. This modern day “roadside” burger stand serves up the most delicious burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine and more. An instant neighborhood fixture, Shake Shack welcomes people from all over the city, country and world who gathered together to enjoy fresh, simple, high-quality versions of the classics in a majestic setting. The rest, as they say, is burger history.

Nopa & Nopalito

Since 2006, San Francisco’s beloved Nopa restaurant has been at the heart of the Bay Area’s vibrant restaurant culture and community. Perennially popular, Nopa specializes in organic wood-fired cuisine, served simply with seasonal ingredients sourced from local purveyors. Collaboration is the heart and soul of their dynamic kitchen, where each chef contributes passion and expertise in building the weekly menu, and their open-air kitchen offers guests the chance to see them at work. At Nopa, it’s always been about taking care of people—neighbors, friends, family—and creating a place for everyone to eat well and connect. The Nopa team builds fresh, new menus each week from the incredible ingredients available to them in Northern California—this means sourcing locally from Farmers’ Markets around the Bay Area and other nearby food purveyors. Nopa serves generous portions, an award-winning wine list, and craft thoughtful, straightforward cocktails.

This philosophy is shared by Nopa’s organic Mexican restaurant, Nopalito. The vibrant neighborhood restaurant celebrates the traditional cuisines of Mexico and utilizes the philosophy of purchasing local, organic, and sustainably-raised ingredients from the Bay Area’s most beloved farms. Nopalito’s 2018 cookbook won “Best International Cookbook” from the James Beard Foundation.

Fort Point Beer Company

San Francisco’s beloved independent brewery, Fort Point, is made up of people who believe the simple things in life can be a whole lot better.

Known for their remarkable cans, a few of our favorite brews are:

Wanderer, a bright and punchy Double IPA with robust papaya and melon aromas that are accented by cool herbal undertones. Hopped with Citra, Mosaic, and Centennial, this beer is refreshingly dry with an upfront bitterness that gives way to a lingering dank character.

Villager, a San Francisco-style IPA. In the San Francisco spirit of innovation, Villager blends classic Northwest hops with contemporary ale yeast to establish a delicately constructed IPA. Villager's hop aroma is both citrusy and floral, complemented by notes of stone fruit and tropical flavor in the finish. A true expression of the cultural contrasts that embody our city by the bay, Villager brings a new twist to this West Coast style.

KSA, a light and crisp Kolsch-style Ale. KSA combines a thoughtful mixture of American bittering hops and traditional German malts to create a complex yet crisp take on the Kölsch style. Munich and Vienna malts construct the beer’s robust, rich grain flavor, while Saphir and Warrior hops bring balance through a clean finish. KSA’s old-school style, blended with bright, updated ingredients, makes this beer a classic on both continents.

Visit Fort Point’s taproom in San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building, every day of the week, whenever you’re thirsty.

Radhaus

Radhaus is a Bavarian beer hall that opened in 2018, by the team that brought you San Francisco’s beloved Suppenküche and Biergarten.

The expansive waterfront space in Fort Mason (inside of San Francisco’s Golden Gate National Park) is home to floor-to-ceiling windowed views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and a whole lot more.

Birdsong

The ambitious restaurant from Chris Bleidorn (Benu, Atelier Crenn, Saison, Alinea) is built around a custom wood-burning oven. Birdsong pays homage to heritage cooking techniques of the past, with a playfully refined and thoughtful menu that highlights the connection between city and nature, offering a menu that pulls pristine ingredients from Northern California to Alaska. Preserving fundamental cooking techniques of the past in a contemporary setting, Birdsong utilizes ancient cooking methods such as open fire, smoke, dry-aging meat, and experimentation with a variety of fermenting techniques. The dishes showcase the bounty of the West Coast with key ingredients like cold water shellfish, wild game, berries, mushrooms, and other seasonal ingredients. Chef and Owner Chris Bleidorn says, “The Birdsong experience can be summed up in a quote by naturalist writer Michael Frome, ‘Each succeeding generation accepts less and less of the real thing because it has no way of understanding what has been lost.’”

4505 Burgers & BBQ

4505 Burgers & BBQ is family owned company based in San Francisco, founded by chef Ryan Farr in January 2009. Initially launching with one product, their lighter-than-air Original Style Chicharrones, or “crispy clouds of porkaliciousness,” followed by their Bacon-Studded Hot Dogs. The business has only grown from there: They've operated stands at farmers' markets all over San Francisco. From December 2012-July 2015 they ran a full-service whole animal butcher shop in San Francisco's Mission District, where they sold responsibly and sustainably raised meat sourced from farms in Northern California. In 2013, 4505 Burgers & BBQ was launched, which serves—you guessed it—burgers, 4505 Meats-style barbecue and more.

The Riddler

The Riddler is a Champagne bar that is known for delicious bar bites and an extensive list of over 100 Champagne selections. The menu focuses primarly on grower-producers (Gaston Chiquet, Pierre Gimonnet, Egly-Ouriet, Pierre Péters, Marc Hébrart, Gonet-Médeville, etc.), vintage wines from traditional houses (Taittinger, Billecart-Salmon, Bollinger, Salon, Ruinart, Dom Pérignon, Krug), and hard-to-find Special Club Champagnes. Offerings are available by the glass, in splits, half bottles, Magnums, Jeroboams, and beyond. Inspired by a lady-power theme, the champagne bar is funded entirely by women, a decision Jen says evolved organically. The restaurant also serves sparkling wines of diverse varietals, a focused selection of still wines, and a single beer: Miller High Life, the Champagne of Beers.

Piccino

Piccino opened their doors on December 2006, and their simple wish was just to make Piccino as welcoming as ones own home. The Founders, Sher Rogat and Margherita Stewart Sagan alway enjoyed making food for family and friends and, everyone told them they should open a restaurant. Thanks to the relationships that Sher and Margherita forged at the market (it was their church on Saturday and Sunday) some of their favorite farms like Mariquita and Star Route agreed to deliver to their tiny establishment, way back when. These longstanding relationships are still a part of their community and they strive to show the essence of the food these farmers grow. As one of their kitchen team member said, they look for the most carrot-y of carrots to bring to your plate!

La Cocina

La Cocina was born out of a belief that a community of natural entrepreneurs, given the right resources, can create self-sufficient businesses that benefit themselves, their families, their community, and the whole city. The food that has come out of this kitchen since 2005 reflects that aspiration and, quite simply, tastes amazing.

La Cocina (pronounced la co-see-nah, meaning “The Kitchen” in Spanish) was inspired by its current home, San Francisco’s Mission District. This ethnically diverse and economically vulnerable neighborhood that thrives in part due to the many small informal businesses that serve the community. Food lies at the heart of this community, and you don’t have to look far to find hidden entrepreneurs in the kitchens of many homes.

Mister Jiu's

In the heart of San Francisco’s historic Chinatown district, Mister Jiu's has taken over the famous Four Seas restaurant, and is reimagining the Chinese banquet experience. Among many very special details of the project, chef owner Brandon Jew is working with local organic Bay Area farmers to grow Chinese vegetables on home turf. Brandon trained extensively throughout China, Italy and California, and all heavily influence his cuisine.

“I really want locals to experience San Francisco Chinatown again,” said Brandon. “This is what San Francisco Chinese food is: some references from our families, our training, our travels, and inspiration from this neighborhood -- they all impact the experience and the food.”

Every design detail, from small to large, is considered and personal to the space: estate sale finds of Chinese pottery, statues, lighting and artwork are peppered throughout the restaurant, local Firestone tile wraps the open kitchen, and a 20 ft-long, 6-ft tall black and white installation by artist Afton Love flanks an entire wall. Original windows and a fire escape along Grant Street reveal a view of Chinatown’s famous bright red hanging lanterns. “I wanted a space that felt current, but with a lot of references to mid-century modern design: That was the era when Chinatown was in its hey-day. Chinatown’s glory days.”

RT Rotisserie

From San Francisco’s Rich Table team comes RT Rotisserie, a casual and approachable rotisserie chicken restaurant set to open in Hayes Valley in early 2017. RT Rotisserie’s menu will be inspired by the comforting meals that husband-and-wife team Evan and Sarah used to refuel with after ski trips: rotisserie chicken, warming soups, California-inspired salads, oysters and hearty sandwiches. RT Rotisserie will feel warm and welcoming, with simple yet delicious food, with the same level of skill and passion they put into every dish at Rich Table.

The Snug

Industry vets Zack Schwab, Shane Matthews, Brian Shin and Jacob Racusin opened The Snug, an upscale neighborhood spot in the heart of Pacific Heights this fall.

After years working at some of the country’s top beer bars, including The Jeffrey in New York City and Mikkeller and Monk’s Kettle in San Francisco, Schwab and Matthews were inspired to bring everything they love about the proper neighborhood bar to life with The Snug. Together with partners Shin and Racusin, they are developing one of the best craft beer and cocktail lists in San Francisco and creating an inviting place for people to enjoy inventive takes on classic bar food.

Birba

Birba is a neighborhood wine bar in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley, owned and operated by sommelier extraordinaire, Angie Valgiusti. Set off the beaten path of Hayes Valley’s main drags, Birba reminds you of that secret little wine bar you discovered while roaming the alleyways of Barcelona, or the cobblestoned roads of Paris. The team is knowledgeable, approachable and chatty - and with grape varieties like juhfark and merenzao on the list, Birba lends itself to a constant conversation. While Valgiusti is all about the wine, Birba itself is just that friendly, social gathering place where you can enjoy a glass of vino, catch up with friends and neighbors and maybe hear a little Beyoncé or Nina Simone while you’re at it.

By the Smoke & The Smell

In By the Smoke & the Smell, spirits expert Thad Vogler takes readers around the world, celebrating the vivid characters who produce hand-made spirits like rum, scotch, cognac and mezcal.  From the mountains of Mexico and the forbidden distilleries of Havana, to the wilds of Scotland and the pastoral corners of France and beyond, this adventure will change how you think about your drink.

Thad Vogler, owner of San Francisco’s acclaimed Bar Agricole and Trou Normand, is one of the most important people in the beverage industry today. He’s a man on a mission to bring “grower spirits”—spirits with provenance, made in the traditional way by individuals rather than by mass conglomerates—to the public eye, before they disappear completely.

We care so much about the food we eat: how it is made, by whom, and where. Yet we are far less careful about the spirits we drink, often allowing the biggest brands with the most marketing dollars to control the narrative. In By the Smoke and the Smell, Vogler is here to set the record straight. This remarkable memoir is the first book to ask the tough questions about the booze industry: where our spirits come from, who makes them, and at what cost.

By the Smoke and the Smell is also a celebration of the people and places behind the most singular, life-changing spirits on earth. Vogler takes us to Normandy, where we drink calvados with lovable Vikings; to Cuba, a country where Vogler lived for a time, and that has so much more to offer than cigars, classic cars, and mojitos; to the jagged cliffs and crystal-clear lochs of Scotland; to Northern Ireland, Oaxaca, Armagnac, Cognac, Kentucky, and California. Alternately hilarious and heartfelt, Vogler’s memoir will open your eyes to the rich world of traditional, small-scale distilling—and in the process, it will completely change the way you think about and buy spirits.
