In her role of Wine Director at Rich Table in San Francisco, Dominique Henderson relishes the opportunity to build the kind of wine list she’s always looking for when she dines out, selecting wines that mirror the food menu and philosophy of the kitchen. To achieve this for Rich Table, Henderson chooses small-production wines that are largely unsung but that she thinks should be better known, usually opting for natural and organic options. She maintains a fun, approachable attitude about her wines, deftly navigating the waters of being educational without being preachy.
With most of her family hailing from Malta, wine has always been a part of Henderson’s life. Growing up, she recalls a friendly competition between her uncles about who could make the best wine, and spending her summers there as a child, earning early exposure to the world of wine and attaining a quick love for the industry. “A four-week trip to Italy solidified my passion for wine and pursuit of the career in the industry,” she says.
A Level 2 sommelier and a member of the Guild of Sommeliers, Henderson has previously worked at a number of renowned San Francisco restaurants like Gary Danko, Quince, and A16. She’s been at Rich Table since 2014, going to great lengths to break down barriers and adopt an approachable attitude towards wine service that enables her to introduce people to wine as an everyday item, not just a luxury for the few.
